Cheil Hong kong

Bean Buro designed a new 25,000sqft (2,322sqm) office space for creative company Cheil over three floors in an office building in Sheung Wan. The design challenge was to create a generous studio-like workspace to reflect the company’s creative culture, allowing staff across different departments to feel connected and to promote interactions within the company, as well as with external partners or clients.

A set of wiggly and curvy conference tables was designed to break down the atmosphere of a traditional corporate conference room. These tables can be playfully re-arranged into four configurations to adapt to different scenarios - from one long table for large-scale meeting, to smaller clusters for small-scale meetings — a reminder of the state of flux as the key to creativity.

The new workspace provides a relaxed atmosphere to encourage creativity. The design prioritises generous spaces for the staff, to allow them to feel at home while at the office. Staff can gather for discussions at various informal meeting places; a comfy lounge with a fireplace, casual café seating, or Hong Kong style diner booths.

The main concept was a continuous ribbon-like joinery system that flows and wraps around the perimeter of the floor space, linking all departments together with shared surfaces to encourage collaborations. The ribbon joinery system provides a variety of functions, including low storage shelves, in-wall seats for informal meetings and shared work surfaces that undulate between desktop and bar heights. Fingers of desk clusters project from this ribbon, and transform into full height bookshelves at one end. The overall effect feels holistic and connected.

Staff are encouraged to personalise their environment and to allow artworks to populate the walls & columns - creating a playful dialogue with the arts and craft district of Sheung Wan.
